Moroccan universities today are no longer battle fields. It is now in the streets of Baghdad that the dismembered bodies of Moroccan students who have failed their exams are found¿
To understand such tragedies, we have to go back 15 years, to the "transitional" period which saw the Left come to power, and the Islamic movement establish itself throughout all areas of our society, and particularly our universities.
Up till then, universities had been the scene of sometimes violent confrontations, but ones which were always synonymous with emancipation. A brief moment caught between the family cocoon and the world of adults. It was a time for political and amorous activism, but also a time when critical awareness was born, the force which is the only effective defence against obscurantism.
This is why we wanted to tell the story of the learning process of the last generation of politically-motivated Moroccan students. These young people intuitively understood that the time of ideological struggle had passed, and that the current fight would now take place on the battlefield of culture.
Our film is based on events which took place between 1988 and 1995 on the campus of Tétouan-Martil. At each stage of our work we put a lot of effort into preserving the intimate nature of the witness accounts which were our raw material.
With Entre parenthèses, we want to combine the overall historical picture with small histories, in the image of the Italian cinema which we love so much: to play with the clichés of propaganda films as much as with the mechanisms which underpin romantic comedies, for, like Youssef Chahine and Jean Eustache, we believe that political agendas can be genuine exercises in seduction.

Synopsis
Northern Morocco. Beginning of the 1990s.
Rahil, a young girl leaving school, decides to go to the literature faculty at the University of Tétouan, against her family's wishes.
Once there, she discovers the growing influence of Islamic fundamentalism on the place and in people's minds. A handful if unionists try to resist its ascendancy.
Among them is Saïd, a brilliant student, who up till now has been on the edge of the movement. He decides to overcome the fundamentalism, to put all his strength into the fight¿
Rahil falls for him, but is she prepared to become involved in the fight herself, and to what extent?
