2009, Sri Lanka is in chaos. The civil war between the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and the Sinhalese government army has ravaged the country for almost thirty years. Siva, a young Tamil refugee living illegally in France discovers the bitterness of exile. The pain and alienation that inhabit him increase the lived trauma of the war that devastated his childhood. As the conflict enters its most violent phase, Siva progressively loses contact with his family, caught in the crossfire of the two warring factions in ravaged northern Sri Lanka. The spectacle of the bloody photos and videos posted on the internet push him progressively into a waking dream, a mental journey that will lead him to the battlefield and the trail of his family.

In an age that is internet-driven how can one experience war in one’s homeland from a distance in a situation of exile? Soundless Dance is about the war that devastated Sri-Lanka, but the film doesn’t want to describe the conflict and analyze its mechanisms. It rather focuses on the emotional ravages it provokes. Therefore, the conflict is entirely subjectivized. It’s inside Siva and only exists through the impressions that it leaves in his flesh and his psyche. It’s his nightmare, the violent waking dream in which he’s caught, seen through the lens of the barbaric spectacle of the bloody videos of the conflict posted on the internet. The exploration through cinema of disarray and anxiety born from the war is for me a way of reinscribing the individual and his inner life in this drama.
