Synopsis
Set in a poor coastal village by the name of Thom Rom, the film centers on three women, whose love lives are unusual and unique to their nature: Hau’s relationship to her husband is like a master and servant. Nhan coddles her husband like a mother and child, and Crazy Loan contends with Khang- the man who raped her when she was 12- as if a victim and culprit. In their own way the three women try to obtain their men’s love and attention, but can they finally get it?
Statement
What draws me to this story is the way the three leading characters love their men. The unique feature of the story is the contrast between the unsettling sentiments beneath and the pretentious peacefulness on the surface. The characters in Glorious Ashes, especially the female characters, persevere and try to overcome their hardships silently and patiently. I am specifically drawn to this abandoned-looking place that is the setting of the story, where life seems monotonously sluggish, even boring on the surface but deep down, it is stressful, confusing, and desperately painful. I chose a simple way to tell the story, from the visuals, to the camera movement, with modest acting. The story is told via an objective, calm, and even indifferent point of view, no matter the situation.
