Synopsis
Elia, a 40-year-old Venezuelan woman, naturally aborts the child she is expecting with Vincent, with whom she lives in a secluded town in France. In the midst of her loss, she opens her wounds from a motherhood truncated long ago and decides to return to her country after an eighteen year-absence. Elia is reunited with her past: Sofia, her now-twenty-year-old daughter, whom she left with Lily, Elia's mother. Sofia, who always felt like an orphan, rises a wall marked by absences, hostility and ruins. Lily, depressed by a recent past of political militancy and determined to remain on top of the rubble of the family she dismembered, demands Elia to take care of Sofia. Feeling rejected, Elia searches for Coco, a man she loved deeply, today immersed in the corruption of a country on the brink of collapse. Facing the brutal daily life of Caracas, when Elia decides to take Sofia out of there with her, the daughter has chosen to finally separate from that family and walk to another country. Elia will go after her.

Elia fait partie des cinq millions de personnes qui ont quitté le Venezuela pendant le chavisme. J'ai fait mes adieux à des dizaines de parents et d'amis et j'ai vu l'effet sur leurs familles qui, dans certains cas, se sont senties abandonnées. Des années ont passé, personne, ni nulle part n’est pareil. Comment faire face à ce qui est méconnaissable ? J'explore les effets du temps et du détachement dans un cercle intime comme celui d'Elia et de sa fille Sofia, qui à leur tour, ont été émotionnellement éloignées par une mère comme Lily, miroir de cet État-pays qui abandonne et expulse les nouvelles générations en n'offrant pas un destin prometteur. Et chez ceux qui sont restés, contraints de s'adapter aux "nouvelles règles" pour survivre. Peut-être qu'en affrontant les blessures et la haine qui ont causé la division et la distance, il serait possible de reconstruire un avenir meilleur avec nos restes.
