Born in Shanghai in 1977, Ying Liang studied in the Art Department of Beijing Normal University and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Directing from Chongqing Film Academy. Ying Liang has made twelve shorts, amongst them "The Missing House" (2003), which won the Best Script Award at the Beijing Student Film Festival and a Critics Award at the Hong Kong Independent Short Film and Video Awards.
Ying Liang's debut feature, "Taking Father Home" (2005), was recognised at many international festivals with five awards, including the Special Jury Prize at the Tokyo filMeX Film Festival 2005, the Golden Digital Award at the Hong Kong International Film Festival 2006, the FIPRESCI Prize and the NETPAC Award at the Singapore International Film Festival 2006. It also screened in competition at the International Film Festival Rotterdam 2006.
